Dr. Silvanus Thrower

Prior to joining DoDEA, Mr. Thrower served as an assistant principal in Henrico County, Va. for five years. As an assistant principal, Mr. Thrower acted as the administrator for safety, Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS), Response To Intervention (RTI), and the social studies, math, science, counseling, and Exceptional Education departments. 

Before becoming an administrator, Mr. Thrower taught Exceptional Education math and science along with gaining administrative experience as an administrative aide and ao-aoordinator for an extended school year program in Henrico County. Prior to becoming an educator, Mr. Thrower was the owner and Executive Director of Guiding Young Minds, a group home for 13-17 year old males for 11 years, during which time he cared for approximately 150 young men that required more structure than a typical foster home. The group home emphasized education, social emotional learning, and life skills in preparation to be enrolled, employed, or enlisted.   

Mr. Thrower is a doctoral candidate at Virginia Commonwealth University pursuing an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership. He will defend his Dissertation in Practice on April 18, 2024. Mr. Thrower has a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University, a master’s degree in Public Administration from Troy University, and a post-master's certificate in Educational Leadership from The George Washington University.  

Mr. Thrower is full of enthusiasm, cherishes the family dynamic, and is passionate about restorative practices, dedicated to student success by ensuring equitable opportunities for all and committed to meeting the social emotional needs of the school community. Mr. Thrower believes that students should have fun learning, teachers should have fun teaching and administrators should have fun leading. 

Mr. Thrower enjoys watching movies, socializing with friends, traveling, and spending time with family.  He and his wife, LaWanda, share three sons and a daughter, all now adults.
